FRENCH WINES Wine Laws of France All major vineyards/quality French wines which achieve certain standards and comply with regulations laid down for each area, region or district are classified by Appellation controlee system (AC for short) set up under French law. Some vineyards have been given a right to use certain place names as an indication of origin. They must fall within official area of Appellation and obey constraints concerning the density of vines; the types of vines planted the production and alcoholic strength etc. The controls are organized by or governed by the Institut National des Appellations d' origine (INAO). AC is a guarantee of origin of wine.
